The old kids rhyme goes:
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
Cute and quaint as it may sound, it’s not very true.
Words can and do hurt.
James 3 is very clear about how the tongue is one of the most powerful and dangerous parts of our bodies. In fact, it’s easier to control a wild horse than our mouths.
Imagine one instance praising God and the next cursing someone who was made in the image of God…just like you. It happens. I’ve done it. My guess is you have too. Thankfully though, with the Spirit’s help, we can be careful about what we say and how we say what we say.
The next time, before you speak, ask yourself if what you’re about to say will be sweet as honey or deadly as poison.
Kind words are like honey— they cheer you up and make you feel strong. Proverbs 16:24 (CEV)
