Have you ever done something and thought “I wish I could do that over?” If you’re like me, it happens far more than I want to admit. Like recently when I hurt my back. Now before you start the pity party for me, let me explain how I hurt my back. Trust me, you won’t feel much pity when you know.
My oldest son and I took our boat to the lake for some much-needed fishing. After backing it in – and for the first time ever like a boss! – I parked the truck and headed down to the dock. As I walked around the truck, I noticed the trailer was slightly crooked in the parking space. Was it a big deal? No…unless you’re me. So I did what any person would do, I tried to lift the trailer and straighten it. That’s when I felt a little tweak in my back. It wasn’t hurting that bad, but it was just enough to let me know I shouldn’t have tried to move the trailer, well that and the fact I’m a grown man old enough to know better.
Flash forward a couple of days later. I could tell my back was still aggravated but it wasn’t bad enough to keep me down. Yet. Until I tried to pick up my youngest son and BANG! Like someone had punched me in my lower back. The pain was so quick and, well, painful, I almost dropped my son. Thank God my wife got him before I dropped to the floor. As I lay on the floor for a while, groaning and knowing what happened, my daughter asked me something very insightful, “Hey, you okay?” Gotta love it. Since then, I’ve gone to the doctor and started light PT. Thankfully it’s nothing major just something stupid that has cost me time and money.
As believers, we do stupid things. Things that, as believers, you’d think we’d know better.
We hurt people.
We hurt ourselves.
And yet, even though we can’t undo our actions or sadly our words, God can undo our sin. In fact, God is the God of the spiritual do-over. That was the purpose of the cross. Jesus took the nails for you and me. Jesus took on all the sin before and all the sin to come so we could stand blameless before God. Almost as if we never did anything bad.
“He will not constantly accuse us,
nor remain angry forever.
He does not punish us for all our sins;
he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.
For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.”
God has every right to remember every sin we’ve committed and hold us totally responsible with no hope of heaven. But because God loves you and me with a love that defies imagination, when we ask Him for forgiveness, He forgives us. It’s mind-blowing, but that’s what He does. God wipes out our sins and gives us a clean slate even though we don’t deserve it. God offers you an amazing spiritual do-over.
Whatever you’ve done. Whatever you will do. Remember this – God’s grace has no limits. Don’t let your sin and mistakes keep you from asking God for forgiveness and a do-over.
